Katie Thompson in World’s Largest Online Music Contest
Self-managed artist Katie Thompson is a force to be reckoned with, not only when she takes the stage but also when it comes to the online music world. After reaching the top spot on theaudience.co.nz in May she went on to be the first Australasian artist to win global competition Artist Signal. Not one to rest on her laurels she’s aiming for the trifecta – Global Rockstar. Global Rockstar has been labeled the “worlds largest online music contest”. The online competition is seeking to uncover the next music phenomenon with the winner taking home a cash prize of USD 25,000. Organisers state that in 2013, more than 2,400 artists from 73 different countries took part in the Global Rockstar pilot project. A multi-stage process will be used to select the Global Rockstar 2014. The national preliminaries begin on 1 September and last until 4 November 2014 – after which the winner from each country will have been decided. Katie needs as much support as she can get to go forward and represent New Zealand.

New release fanfare
Electric Wire Hustle – ‘Love Can Prevail‘
Okayplayer Records and Somethinksoundsjoin forces to present the New Zealand duo’s second LP. Their critically-acclaimed self-titled 2010 debut thrust the group into the international spotlight and achieved cult status following its release, garnering support from the like Gilles Peterson and Benji B on BBC Radio, which has continued with the release of their latest singlesIf These Are The Last Days and By & Bye. Deep and rootsy the EWH sound draws influence from an array of cultures and traditions, always on the pulse their ‘far out’ approach to soul, rock, beats and blues separate them from near enough every band in todays contemporary music spectrum. The group recently returned from a string of US live dates, including a much praised set alongside Questlove at The Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, marking an end to their 4 year hiatus.

@PEACE and Dictaphone Blues share new music videos
@PEACE have premiered their brand new music video for “Matter” over at Vice’s Noisypage. You can watch the clip, which is beautifully shot and directed by Motion Sickness Studios here. It’s imagines band and the Young, Gifted and Broke collective as they might be in fifty years time, attending one of their own funerals. It also features Keisha Castle-Hughes as a funeral home cleaner.
http://vimeo.com/108850651
Speaking with Noisy, @PEACE’s Tom Scott explained the inspiration for the clip:
“It was inspired by the little sandwiches they have at funerals. It was my great uncle’s funeral. He’d died totally absent and I doubt he could’ve told you his own name. The funeral just reinstated to me the meaninglessness of this shit…” To co-incide with the video’s release Tom Scott, aged by 50 years, graces the front cover of this week’s issue of THE FOLD which is out today.
The music video for DICTAPHONE BLUES’ “Her Heart Breaks Like A Wave” doubles as a report from this years Shredisloe Cup. It’s hilarious. Watch it here.

AIR announces its new CEO
The Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR) has announced Dan Nevin as its new Chief Executive Officer.
Nevin takes over from ex-General Manager Nick O’Byrne, who announced his departure in June after a five-year tenure. AIR’s last CEO was Stuart Watters, who exited in 2009.
Nevin steps into the role from his position as Digital Music Manager at JB HI-FI; prior to that he was AFL Media’s Digital Marketing & Subscriptions Manager, Internet Operations Manager at book retailer REDgroup and perhaps most notably the General Manager of Export for Shock Records, a post he held for over 12 years from 1998 – 2010.

The 20 Most Influential Music Blogs…
Wednesday, March 26, 2014
by
Nina Ulloa
We often discuss which bands are getting the most online buzz, like in the 50 most blogged artists list. But who is talking about these bands and creating the buzz?
Enter this list of the most influential music blogs, Style of Sound created a list of the top 100. They included web-only sites, no blogs that are associated with print magazines, newspapers, or radio stations. I’ve included the top 20 here so you can see who the major players are.
Their list was created using a scoring system based on post frequency, quality, SEO, social media, and Klout score. It isn’t perfect… they excluded XLR8R because they thought it was still a print magazine, but they’ve been web only since 2011. They also list Tiny Mix Tapes ahead of Resident Advisor, which I’m not so sure about.
All of that aside, this will give you general knowledge of the most important music blogs. If you care, I’ve put stars next to the ones that I read regularly.
1. Pitchfork*
2. Consequence of Sound
3. Tiny Mix Tapes
4. Resident Advisor*
5. Stereogum
